I lost it all in 2023. My home, my belongings, my memories and my job.
On Mother’s Day 2023, I lost my family home of 22 years in a fire. We ran out of the house with only the clothes on our backs just as our home ignited in flames. In fact, my older son ran out with no shoes, no shirt. Two months later, I was laid off from my corporate job on my 16 year Anniversary. I lost everything!
Or did I?...
Although my home was gone, I still had 5 investment properties that were purchased leveraging my home for my home equity line of credit.
If it wasn’t for real estate investing, my story would have been very different.
Was it just luck, or was it the smart move of not procrastinating, knowing tomorrow's uncertain?
I drank the Kool-Aid and followed the traditional path of a corporate JOB, believing that if I worked hard and earned a decent salary, I would be able to retire comfortably at 65 years old .
Despite the toxicity, stress, and lack of work life balance, I had convinced myself that my corporate job equaled security.
I acquired skills in business analysis, project management, process improvement, change management, coaching, facilitation and learning and performance development, and created an excellent brand for myself in my company. I was in the top tier salary band for my role.
But unless I wanted to be in a people management leadership role, there wasn’t much room left for salary growth. I’d hit a ceiling financially, while sacrificing the things I wanted to do in life to get there.
Then reality struck…
When I turned 50 years old, I had the sudden realization that my retirement income would not be able to support a comfortable retirement life that included traveling the world even after working another 15 years until I was 65.
The thought of having to work another 15 years of my corporate job left me exhausted and anxious.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I’ve always had a goal of “Freedom 55” but that was definitely not achievable in the path that I was following.
If I couldn’t support a comfortable retirement life, then I definitely couldn’t leave an inheritance for my children. Housing costs were exuberant, and inflation continued to increase at a rate no one could keep up with.
The thought that my children would never be able to afford a home of their own kept me up at night.
Since my early 20s, I have ALWAYS had an inner voice that whispered, "Buy a property and rent it out!" I always dismissed that voice with excuses around lack of money and knowledge. Plus, it was totally against the grain!
That voice called again in 2019 and this time, I didn’t ignore it. I joined a real estate investing education organization and began working with a coach. This was the key that transformed knowledge into financial freedom.
With an uncertain retirement looming on the horizon, I jumped into real estate investing, acquiring 6 properties in 2 years using a variety of strategies, along with private lending and private equity investments. However, I was feeling overwhelmed trying to manage the success I was having, along with a full-time job. I didn’t know what to do next.
Then a light bulb went on…
I was treating my real estate investing like a hobby and like investing in stocks, but it wasn’t the same.
Real estate investing is a business. I needed to take on the mindset and persona of a business owner. I wasn’t being efficient with my time or my finances. This was when I decided to hit pause on my real estate investing, to build the business around real estate investing, so it could take off the way I knew it could.
I transformed my real estate investing business using my expertise as a Business Analyst and delved into the strategy that was right for me. I used my Project Management practices creating action plans and risk mitigation strategies to keep moving forward. I gave myself back time in my day, using my skills in process improvement and IT knowledge to simplify my processes, make them reusable and automate. When I resumed my real estate investing, I had more time for the more important aspects of my business, I had time to run multiple businesses at the same time. I no longer felt overwhelmed. There was no longer the need to chase every shiny object as the right strategies for me were very clear.
I’ve always been a mentor, a coach and a teacher in my corporate roles and volunteering.
Through numerous conversations with other real estate investors, especially novice investors, I realized that I was not alone in feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or chasing shiny objects. The root of these obstacles was not knowing what strategy was right for them. They didn’t have the guidance and wasted time, money and opportunity as they experienced analysis paralysis.
I found the gap in what other coaches were offering - just teaching strategies, but no one knew how to implement it, which strategy to choose - without additional coaching, investors were paralyzed and unable to build an actual business. And that's where I come in - to help you save massive amounts of time and money!
I wanted to share my knowledge and skills to help others build a real estate investing strategy that was unique to them with business processes and tools to help them to be time efficient and concentrate their effort on the best ROI.
In August 2023, two months after losing our family home, all of our memories and belongings in a fire, the “secure corporate job” was no more.
I was laid off!!!
When I first heard the news, I was upset and just as quickly in the same conversation, I was elated. I realized that when it came to my career, this was exactly what I wanted. I had manifested it. I already had a plan in place for my real estate investing and my coaching business.
Today, I have created coaching programs customized for adult learners with limited time. My greatest achievements in life are not displayed through certificates hanging on the wall or trophies in a case. My greatest achievements are my two amazing sons that I am very proud of.
In my early twenties, I left my full-time bank job and flew to Fort Lauderdale from Toronto to work on a cruise line. I had no job offer, just a place on a one month coaching program for cruise ships. I was told that I was crazy, giving up a good job and I probably would not get a job on a cruise ship.
A few days after graduating from my program, I was on a plane to Barbados to meet my first ship. Five years later, I met my husband while working on cruise ships and we got married two years later.
